Manifesto
My Sore Sandals stands for:
-
the simple, pure joy of photography and the constant search for subjects that comes with it, which changes and enriches one’s view of the world
-
capturing moments, situations and moods – e.g. special light, the ‘magic of decay’, details, things otherwise overlooked (aka ‘ugly’ things)
-
our photographic eye, honed over decades
-
authentic, minimally edited, AI-free photography that isn’t stolen
My Sore Sandals does not stand for:
-
collecting clicks and likes, and explicitly does not participate in the social media hype
-
photos that are consumed within a few seconds do not make it into our portfolio in the first place
-
submission to the absurd art market strategies that dare to judge quality on the basis of pre-agreed CVs, nepotism and spectacle-worthiness
It comes down to this:
-
we do not produce mass-market goods and reject the culture of spectacle – we do not seek attention at any cost, which also means that we do not turn up at exhibition openings in fancy costumes
-
we also dare to explore quiet tones, nuances, subtleties and restraint – photography doesn’t have to shout to be interesting
-
we do not stage second-hand or plastic realities
-
we select our work carefully; quality must always take precedence over quantity
-
we are deeply bored / fed up with the excessive ego-celebration of our times
-
we believe the world has more to offer than a mobile phone screen
-
we have no interest in following trends, whether dictated by social media or the art market
-
we have been celebrating this act of looking and marvelling for over 30 years, which also means we constantly challenge ourselves to keep learning
-
we refuse to produce or consume selfies
-
we value and respect the person or subject we photograph – portraits do not need to be taken without warning to appear authentic and are therefore always agreed upon in advance
